Technical Support in Laboratory Education for a Visually Impaired Student

　2023年12月に発売し大好評を博した『勇気と覚悟――視覚障害学生の実験教育における技術支援』の英語版。
　2019年4月、早稲田大学 先進理工学部に一人の全盲の学生が入学した。小学2年生の時に全盲となった彼女は、筑波大学附属視覚特別支援学校中学部、都立高校を経て、早稲田大学を受験。みごと現役合格を果たしたのである。
　はたしてどのようにすれば、全盲の学生に大学の実験科目を履修してもらうことが可能なのか。この課題に中心となって対応したのが、早稲田大学 理工学術院統合事務・技術センターの技術職員たちであった。つねに彼女に寄り添いながら、学内外のステークホルダーたちを巻き込みつつ、高等教育機関として実験科目を通じて彼女に何を伝えるべきか、という根本的な問題意識の下に奔走した彼ら。その現場からの報告。

早稲田大学 理工学術院統合事務・技術センター
早稲田大学の理工3学部・研究科（基幹理工学部・研究科、創造理工学部・研究科、先進理工学部・研究科）の事務業務を行う事務部と技術支援を行う技術部で成る職員組織。
技術部には、高い専門性を持った約100 人の技術職員が所属し、広く社会の変革に寄与できる実践力を持った理工系人材を育成・輩出すべく、理論と実践を結びつけた教育支援や研究用共同利用設備等を介した研究支援を行っている。
理工3学部では実践的な「実験教育」をとりわけ重視しており、分野別に組織化された技術職員が、学部や学科の枠を超えて利用する実験室において、教員と協働しながら技術指導を行うとともに、組織的に機器や装置設備を集中管理し、より高度で充実した教育研究環境を実現している。
